Topic: Whiplash Associated Disorders (WAD): Update: 2023
Credit Hours: 2
Instructor: Dr Steven G. Yeomans, DC, FIANM(US), DABCC
Course Description: Whiplash-associated disorder (WAD) is the most common non-catastrophic injury caused by motor vehicle collisions (MVCs). Of those injured, 20-50% will continue to report persistent signs and symptoms 12 months later that interfere with activities of daily living. The associated economic burden is disproportionately high with annual costs estimated at $42 billion in the U.S. for non-fatal MVC-related injuries. Grouped together neck pain from both trauma and non-traumatic origins is the 4th leading cause of years lived with disability globally. This statistic alarmingly has not changed since 1990, suggesting few advances have occurred regarding the prevention and rehabilitation of neck pain and, its overall global burden. This online chiropractic CE course will offer a new algorithm of care that can help guide healthcare providers in the management process.
Course Outline:
· Present a detailed description of underlying causes of delayed recovery or, chronic WAD.
· Offer a new algorithm encouraging a multi-modal model of care delivery
· Review in-office chiropractic diagnostic tools.
· Chiropractic manual therapy and ancillary treatment options.
· Strategies for integrating into a multi-modal care team.
Learning Objectives:
· Review WAD, its burden, its mechanisms of injury and persistence.
· Apply clinical knowledge to properly diagnose WAD.
· Discuss chiropractic management of WAD.
· Apply an algorithm of multi-modal management that is individually based.
