Michigan chiropractors must complete 30 hours of board-approved continuing education in the two-year period immediately preceding each renewal application, with at least 10 hours completed live and in person and no more than 20 hours through distance learning — including 1 hour in pain and symptom management, 1 hour in sexual boundaries, 1 hour in ethics, and 2 hours in physical measures, under the Michigan Board of Chiropractic (R 338.12037 and R 338.12041). Michigan amended these rules in May 2025: the distance-learning allowance rose from 15 to 20 hours, the in-person minimum dropped from 15 to 10, the two-hour test-ordering requirement was eliminated, and FCLB PACE-approved programs are now automatically accepted. This page walks through the current requirements, the in-person minimum, implicit bias and human trafficking training, and record-keeping.

An applicant for renewal must complete 30 hours of continuing education in the two-year period immediately preceding the renewal application. Submitting the renewal application constitutes your certification that you have met the requirement.
Michigan no longer uses a single statewide renewal date for chiropractors. Your license expiration is now tied to the date your license was originally issued, so renewal deadlines are staggered across the profession. Check your expiration date in your LARA account rather than assuming a common deadline — and note that no more than 12 credit hours may be earned in any single 24-hour period, so hours cannot be crammed at the end.
Michigan specifies four subject areas that must be satisfied inside the 30-hour total:
Pain & symptom management — 1 hour.
Broadly defined: manipulative treatment, manual therapies, therapeutic exercise for pain, behavior management, psychology of pain, stress management, and clinical applications all qualify.
Sexual boundaries — 1 hour.
Professional boundary standards in patient care.
Ethics — 1 hour.
Professional ethics coursework.
Physical measures — 2 hours.
Physical measures as defined for chiropractic practice in Michigan.
A course that is identical or substantially identical to one you have already received credit for during the same license cycle will not be granted credit again.
Up to 20 of your 30 hours may be completed through distance learning, which includes internet courses and other formats where instructor and participant are apart. Correspondingly, at least 10 hours must be completed by attending a live, in-person program.
As of May 2025, continuing education programs approved or offered by FCLB PACE are automatically approved in Michigan — no separate Board application is needed for those programs. These two requirements come from Michigan's health-profession-wide rules rather than the chiropractic rules specifically, and they work differently from one another:
Implicit bias — 2 hours, each license cycle. Required as a condition of initial licensure and of renewal for all Michigan health professionals. Under the amended rules, these hours may be counted as part of your 30 rather than in addition to them.
Human trafficking — one-time. A one-time training requirement for Michigan health professionals; once completed, it does not repeat each renewal. Confirm your status with LARA if you are unsure whether you have satisfied it.
Submitting your renewal application constitutes your certification that the continuing education requirement has been met. Do not send CE documentation with your renewal application.
Keep documentation of your hours for 4 years after the date of applying for renewal. LARA conducts audits at the conclusion of the renewal period, selecting licensees through random selection; those chosen are contacted by letter and must produce evidence of completion. A chiropractor unable to provide that evidence is in violation of the Public Health Code and subject to sanctions. Michigan amended its chiropractic administrative rules in May 2025. Several widely-circulated CE summaries — including some legal-code databases still publishing the pre-amendment text — have not caught up. The changes:
