Skeletal muscle is the largest endocrine organ in the body and one of the strongest independent predictors of all-cause mortality. CLHS 203 gives chiropractors a defensible, evidence-based framework for screening sarcopenia chair-side, prescribing resistance training, and dosing dietary protein for adults 50 and older.
Arland Hill, DC, MPH, DACBN, works from the biology up: grip strength and VO2 max as mortality biomarkers you can measure in the office, the myokine case for muscle as medicine, anabolic resistance and the per-meal leucine threshold, and the scope, workflow and documentation that keep all of it inside chiropractic practice. Part 2 continues as CLHS 207.
Where This Course Fits — The Five CLHS Pillars
You are here: CLHS 203 — Pillar 2, Metabolic Efficiency. Muscle as a metabolic and endocrine organ is the foundation of this pillar; CLHS 203 is Part 1; CLHS 207 (Muscle as Medicine, Part 2: Strength Programming) turns it into programming — exercise selection, power and bone loading, older-adult modifications.
1. Neuromechanical Integrity
Spinal and joint mechanics, proprioception, balance and fall risk, and the evidence on manipulation across the lifespan.
2. Metabolic Efficiency
Muscle as a metabolic organ, nutrition for healthy aging, medication-induced nutrient depletion, and the lab markers worth watching.
3. Functional Movement
Strength, power and mobility programs that keep patients capable.
4. Sleep Hygiene
Sleep as a longevity lever: assessment, disruptors, and non-pharmacologic approaches within chiropractic scope.
5. Stress Adaptation
Autonomic resilience, the biology of stress, and the tools for measuring a patient's adaptive capacity.

What You'll Learn
- Muscle as an endocrine organ: Explain why skeletal muscle is considered the largest endocrine organ in the body and how this reframes its role in chiropractic patient care.
- Chair-side sarcopenia screening: Identify four chair-side sarcopenia screening tools (SARC-F, grip dynamometry, 5x sit-to-stand, gait speed) with cut-off thresholds and documentation language.
- Resistance-training prescription: Apply evidence-based resistance-training prescription parameters (2 sessions/week, 6–12 reps, 50–85% 1RM) for adults 50 and older within chiropractic scope.
- Protein and leucine dosing: Integrate protein dosing (1.2–1.6 g/kg/day) and the per-meal leucine threshold (~2.5–3.0 g) with exercise prescription to overcome anabolic resistance.
Your Faculty
Arland Hill, DC, MPH, DACBN — Director of Clinical Education at Biotics Research Corporation. He lectured at Texas A&M College of Medicine from 2009 to 2024, presents nationally for the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M), and maintains an active clinical practice at Genesis Wellness Center in Hillister, Texas. His teaching translates current research in sarcopenia, anabolic resistance, myokine biology and protein dosing into defensible, evidence-based protocols chiropractors can integrate within scope; he teaches the muscle, cardiovascular and metabolic courses in the CLHS series.
Also teaching in the series: Howard Benedikt, DC, DCBCN · Michael Hall, DC, FIACN · Dennis O'Hara, DC, DACBSP
Credit, Reporting & State Rules
CLHS 203 is a 2-hour on-demand course, PACE-recognized and co-sponsored by Texas Chiropractic College — the approval pathway most boards accept for online chiropractic CE. Its approval list renders at the bottom of this page, straight from the course record; that list is the one to trust.
Most boards cap the share of a renewal that can be earned online, and several classify nutrition, exercise and wellness coursework under a general or clinical category rather than a named one — check how your board counts it before relying on CLHS hours for a specific requirement.
Texas: licensees can verify provider status through the Texas Board of Chiropractic Examiners. For every other state and province, start at the CE guidelines directory.
Build Your CLHS Block
$40 for 2 CE hours — $20 per hour. Pair it with CLHS 207 (Muscle as Medicine, Part 2: Strength Programming) for the 4-hour Muscle as Medicine block, or stack the pillar courses as they come online.
Multi-course discounts apply automatically in the cart — 10% at 6–9 hours, 20% at 10 or more, no promo code. Hours from any CCEDseminars on-demand category count toward the same tiers.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does CLHS 203 cover?
A two-hour, evidence-based framework for muscle as medicine in chiropractic practice: why skeletal muscle is the body's largest endocrine organ and a leading predictor of all-cause mortality, four chair-side sarcopenia screening tools with cut-off thresholds, resistance-training prescription parameters for adults 50 and older, and protein dosing with the per-meal leucine threshold to overcome anabolic resistance. Also known as sarcopenia CE, strength training for older adults CE or muscle-centric longevity CE.
Who teaches it, and is it for chiropractors?
Arland Hill, DC, MPH, DACBN, Director of Clinical Education at Biotics Research Corporation and a national presenter for the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine. The course is written for practicing chiropractors and stays inside chiropractic scope: screening, exercise prescription, nutrition guidance, documentation, and referral when training exceeds scope. It is PACE-recognized and co-sponsored by Texas Chiropractic College.
My patient says they are too old to lift weights — what does the evidence say?
That the opposite is true. Anabolic resistance is real after 50, which is exactly why older adults need a deliberate dose of resistance training and protein rather than less of it. The course gives you the prescription — two sessions a week, 6–12 repetitions, 50–85% of one-rep max, multi-joint movements with progressive overload — the protein and leucine targets that make it work, the screening numbers that show it is working, and the patient-communication scripts and referral patterns for when a program needs more than a chiropractic office can supervise.
How is the course delivered, and when do I get my certificate?
Recorded video you can watch on any device, with one year of access from purchase. Pass the short post-test and your certificate is available immediately. For states served by CE Broker, completion is reported automatically.
What is the difference between Part 1 and Part 2?
CLHS 203 is Part 1: the biology case for muscle as medicine, chair-side sarcopenia screening, the resistance-training prescription and protein dosing. CLHS 207, Muscle as Medicine, Part 2: Strength Programming, is the applied half: programming variables (frequency, intensity, volume, progressive overload, recovery), exercise selection by movement pattern, power and bone loading, older-adult and frailty modifications, and the common programming mistakes. Take 203 first; 207 builds on it. The category page lists what is available now; new courses are added monthly as each live webinar is converted.
