The neck goes where the eyes need it to. When accommodation or convergence starts failing, the head moves to compensate, and the muscles that hold it there start complaining. That is why a patient with a stubborn neck can have a visual problem, and why the neck alone never quite fixes it.
This two-hour course works the visuomotor and optomotor systems and their consequences for neck and back posture. It covers developmental milestones in eye and neck development, the role of the sternocleidomastoid and upper trapezius in chronic neck pain at work and at school, accommodation and near/far visual adjustment, convergence insufficiency and how to test for it, and ready-to-implement exercises for improving opto-motor strength alongside how therapeutic optometry fits.

Where Neurology CE Hours Count — State Rules Worth Knowing
Clinical neurology coursework is clinical subject matter — assessment, diagnosis and case management — which is exactly what several state boards ask for. In Iowa, these hours serve the 36-hour clinical case-management minimum; in Rhode Island, they address the 50-of-60 clinical requirement; and in Vermont — where practice-building coursework earns nothing — patient-care education like this counts fully under the clinical-focus rule.

Neurology 244 — Frequently Asked Questions
Can eye strain really cause neck and back pain?
The course is built around that question. The visuomotor and optomotor systems position the head to put the eyes where they need to be, so when accommodation or convergence is failing, the neck compensates. The sternocleidomastoid and upper trapezius are where that compensation is paid for, and the course covers their role in chronic neck pain directly.
What is convergence insufficiency?
A failure of the eyes to converge comfortably for near work — increasingly common in screen-heavy work and school. The course covers clinical testing approaches for it, which matters because it is easy to test, frequently missed, and treatable.
Which muscles carry the load?
Chiefly the sternocleidomastoid and upper trapezius. The course covers identifying stress-carrying areas and the pattern of chronic neck pain seen in workplace and school settings — the same postural picture in a forty-year-old at a monitor and a twelve-year-old at a laptop.
What can I actually do about it?
There is a section of ready-to-implement exercises for improving opto-motor strength, plus how therapeutic optometry works and where it fits. The intent is that you leave with a repertoire you can use on Monday, not a referral you make and forget.
Should I be co-managing with an optometrist?
Frequently, yes — the course covers therapeutic optometry workings for that reason. Knowing what a developmental or behavioural optometrist does, and being able to send a specific question rather than a vague one, makes the referral worth making.
