A hand quietly losing strength is one of the earlier objective signs of cervical myelopathy, and one of the least often measured. Grip is fast to test, comparable between visits, and unlike most of what a patient reports, it produces a number.

This two-hour course makes grip strength a clinical procedure. It covers the overview, dynamometry and the pinch test; cervical myelopathy — its clinical signs and the grip strength normative values that make a reading meaningful; clinical management considerations including the finger escape sign and finger tap; and a review of the research literature.

Where Neurology CE Hours Count — State Rules Worth Knowing

Clinical neurology coursework is clinical subject matter — assessment, diagnosis and case management — which is exactly what several state boards ask for. In Iowa, these hours serve the 36-hour clinical case-management minimum; in Rhode Island, they address the 50-of-60 clinical requirement; and in Vermont — where practice-building coursework earns nothing — patient-care education like this counts fully under the clinical-focus rule.

Why measure grip strength at all?

Because it is quick, quantitative and repeatable, and it tracks things a subjective report will not. The course treats grip strength as a clinical procedure rather than a curiosity — covering dynamometry, the pinch test, and the normative values that turn a number into a finding.

What does grip strength have to do with cervical myelopathy?

It is one of the earlier objective changes. The course covers the clinical signs of cervical myelopathy alongside grip strength normative values, because a hand that is quietly losing strength and dexterity in a patient with neck complaints is a finding that deserves weight rather than reassurance.

What are the finger escape sign and finger tap?

Two bedside tests covered in the clinical management section. Finger escape describes the ulnar digits drifting into abduction when the hand is held extended; finger tap looks at the speed and regularity of rapid finger movement. Both are fast, need no equipment, and add to the myelopathic picture.

Do I need a dynamometer?

It makes the measurement objective and comparable between visits, which is the whole argument for measuring rather than estimating. The course covers dynamometry and the pinch test together, and the normative values that make a reading interpretable.

How is this different from Neurology 201 on myelopathy management?

201 is the management course — the myelopathic differential, the upper motor neuron signs, and what stops a cervical adjustment. 247 comes at it through one measurement: what grip strength is, how to take it properly, and how it contributes to recognising cervical myelopathy early. Complementary rather than overlapping.
