Thoracic outlet syndrome borrows the presentation of nearly everything around it. Cervical radiculopathy, a peripheral entrapment, a cranky shoulder — the arm complains in a way that fits several stories, and the anatomy of the outlet is what lets you tell which one you are in.
This two-hour course takes TOS from a neurological perspective. It covers the anatomy of the outlet and inlet, epidemiology, and clinical signs and presentation, then works through the orthopedic tests and the neurologic signs and tests as distinct evaluations. The functional neurologic considerations ask how the presentation developed and which came first — and the management discussion runs from chiropractic adjustments through to first rib resection, with clinical pearls throughout.

Where Neurology CE Hours Count — State Rules Worth Knowing
Clinical neurology coursework is clinical subject matter — assessment, diagnosis and case management — which is exactly what several state boards ask for. In Iowa, these hours serve the 36-hour clinical case-management minimum; in Rhode Island, they address the 50-of-60 clinical requirement; and in Vermont — where practice-building coursework earns nothing — patient-care education like this counts fully under the clinical-focus rule.

What is thoracic outlet syndrome, exactly?
Compression of the neurovascular bundle as it passes from the neck into the arm — through the interscalene triangle, under the clavicle, and beneath the pectoralis minor. The course opens on the anatomy of the outlet and inlet and the epidemiology, because TOS is both over-diagnosed and missed, and the anatomy is what separates the two.
How is it diagnosed?
By pattern rather than a single test. The course covers clinical signs and presentation, and works through both the orthopedic tests and the neurologic signs and tests as separate objectives — the distinction matters because vascular, neurogenic and disputed presentations do not behave alike.
What is the functional neurologic angle?
It is the part that separates this course from a standard orthopedic treatment. The outline asks “How did we get here?” and “Which came first?” — whether the compression created the postural pattern or the postural pattern created the compression. That answer changes the treatment order.
Does treatment mean surgery?
Not usually, and the course covers the full range — from chiropractic adjustments through to first rib resection — alongside management considerations and clinical pearls. Knowing where the surgical threshold sits is part of managing the much larger group who are nowhere near it.
Why does TOS get missed so often?
Because it borrows the presentation of everything around it — cervical radiculopathy, a peripheral entrapment, a shoulder problem. The epidemiology section exists for that reason: knowing how common each alternative is, is what stops the diagnosis being made on enthusiasm.
