Strengthen your orthopedic and neurologic clinical reasoning with Orthopedics 221: “Burner Syndrome” – An Ortho / Neuro Perspective. This 2-hour online chiropractic CE course, taught by Michael Hall, DC, FIACN, reviews burner and stinger syndrome through the lens of chiropractic orthopedics, functional neurology, sports injury assessment, and practical examination decision-making.

Burner or stinger presentations can involve traction, compression, or direct trauma affecting the brachial plexus or cervical nerve roots. This course helps chiropractors think through the clinical picture: unilateral burning pain, paresthesia, numbness, weakness, cervical and shoulder considerations, recurrence risk, red flags, referral concerns, and return-to-activity reasoning.

About the Instructor

Michael Hall, DC, FIACN teaches chiropractic continuing education with a strong emphasis on orthopedics, neurology, clinical reasoning, examination interpretation, and the practical application of diagnostic thinking in chiropractic practice.

His CCEDseminars courses are designed for chiropractors who want clinically relevant online CE that supports better examination confidence, sharper differential diagnosis, and more informed treatment planning.

Course Description

Orthopedics 221 focuses on “Burner Syndrome,” also called stinger syndrome, from an orthopedic and neurologic perspective. These injuries are commonly associated with contact or collision sports and may involve the upper brachial plexus, cervical nerve roots, or surrounding neuromusculoskeletal structures. Chiropractors must be able to recognize the presentation, evaluate neurologic findings, identify red flags, and understand when symptoms require more extensive workup or referral.

This course helps clinicians connect anatomy, mechanism of injury, orthopedic testing, neurologic examination, differential diagnosis, and return-to-activity considerations. The goal is not simply to recognize a “burner,” but to understand the patient presentation in context, especially when symptoms are recurrent, prolonged, bilateral, associated with neck pain, or suggestive of more serious cervical spine or neurologic involvement.

Learning Objectives

After completing this 2-hour online chiropractic CE course, participants should be able to:

  • Describe burner/stinger syndrome as an orthopedic and neurologic clinical presentation.
  • Review common mechanisms involving traction, compression, or direct trauma to the brachial plexus or cervical nerve roots.
  • Identify key symptoms such as unilateral burning pain, paresthesia, numbness, weakness, and shoulder or arm involvement.
  • Differentiate routine transient presentations from cases requiring closer evaluation, imaging consideration, referral, or delayed return to activity.
  • Apply orthopedic and neurologic examination reasoning to cervical spine, shoulder girdle, and upper extremity findings.
  • Recognize recurrence concerns, risk factors, and red flags that may change clinical management.
Course Outline
  • Clinical overview: Definition of burner/stinger syndrome and why it matters in chiropractic orthopedic and neurologic evaluation.
  • Mechanisms of injury: Traction, compression, direct trauma, cervical side-bending, shoulder depression, and contact-sport injury patterns.
  • Relevant anatomy: Cervical nerve roots, upper brachial plexus, shoulder girdle structures, cervical foraminal considerations, and upper extremity neurologic pathways.
  • Clinical presentation: Burning pain, electric-shock sensation, paresthesia, numbness, weakness, cervical and shoulder symptoms, and symptom duration.
  • Orthopedic and neurologic examination: History, inspection, cervical range of motion, shoulder assessment, myotomes, dermatomes, reflexes, provocative testing, and functional findings.
  • Differential diagnosis: Cervical radiculopathy, brachial plexopathy, spinal cord involvement, fracture concern, concussion overlap, shoulder injury, and other neurologic red flags.
  • Recurrent and persistent cases: Why repeated symptoms, prolonged weakness, bilateral symptoms, or neck pain may require additional evaluation.
  • Management reasoning: Activity modification, rehabilitation concepts, strengthening, posture, protective equipment considerations, and referral decision-making.
  • Return-to-activity considerations: Symptom resolution, pain-free cervical motion, restored strength, normal neurologic exam, and risk-aware decision-making.
