Course Overview

Orthopedics 224: Breathe - A Closer Look at Mouth Breathing and Health is a 2-hour online chiropractic continuing education course taught by Michael Hall, DC, FIACN.

Breathing patterns can influence more than oxygen exchange. This course examines nasal versus mouth breathing, airway obstruction, oral dryness, sleep quality, posture, dentofacial development, craniofacial muscle activity, and the broader health considerations chiropractors may encounter in patient care.

The course is designed to help chiropractors better recognize breathing-related patterns in the history and examination, communicate clinical observations clearly, and understand when airway, sleep, dental, ENT, or medical referral considerations may be appropriate.

Instructor

Michael Hall, DC, FIACN brings a neuro-orthopedic and functional neurology perspective to this course, helping chiropractors connect breathing patterns, airway function, sleep, posture, oral health, and whole-person clinical reasoning.

Learning Objectives

After completing this course, participants should be able to:

  • Describe differences between nasal breathing and mouth breathing in the context of patient health.
  • Identify common airway, sleep, oral health, and postural considerations associated with chronic mouth breathing.
  • Discuss how mouth breathing may relate to sleep disruption, oral dryness, dentofacial changes, fatigue, and behavior concerns.
  • Recognize screening clues that may warrant additional airway, sleep, dental, ENT, or medical evaluation.
  • Improve patient communication around breathing patterns, sleep quality, oral health, and health behavior factors.
  • Integrate breathing-related observations into chiropractic documentation and patient management planning.
Course Outline
  1. Clinical orientation: why breathing patterns matter in chiropractic orthopedics, neurology, and whole-person care.
  2. Breathing design: reviewing nasal breathing, mouth breathing, airway anatomy, and daily breathing behaviors.
  3. Nasal versus mouth breathing: comparing airflow, filtration, humidity, oral dryness, and physiologic considerations.
  4. Common contributors: discussing nasal obstruction, congestion, allergies, deviated septum, enlarged tonsils or adenoids, and sleep-related breathing concerns.
  5. Sleep and energy: reviewing snoring, dry mouth on waking, drooling, fatigue, and non-restorative sleep as clinical clues.
  6. Oral and dentofacial health: considering oral dryness, saliva changes, caries risk, periodontal concerns, malocclusion, and craniofacial development patterns.
  7. Posture and neuromuscular effects: exploring tongue position, lip seal, mandibular posture, head posture, and craniofacial muscle activity.
  8. Screening and referral awareness: identifying history questions, observation points, and referral considerations for dental, ENT, sleep, or medical evaluation.
  9. Patient management and documentation: communicating findings, supporting behavior awareness, and documenting breathing-related clinical considerations.
