The chronically unstable ankle — the "floppy ankle" — is far more than a mechanical problem. Repeated lateral ankle sprains do not simply stretch or tear ligaments; they disrupt the rich network of mechanoreceptors embedded in those structures, producing proprioceptive deficits, altered neuromuscular firing patterns, and a compromised ability to sense and respond to joint position changes in real time. Left unaddressed, these neurological impairments perpetuate the cycle of re-injury and can contribute to chronic pain, functional instability, and progressive degeneration of the ankle joint complex.

In Orthopedics 218, Michael Hall, DC, FIACN brings orthopedic and neurologic expertise together: a detailed review of ankle joint anatomy, the common ankle sprain from mechanism of injury and grading through current best practices, and the ortho/neuro perspective on how mechanical instability and neurological impairment interact — why the resting attitude of the foot is a key clinical indicator, and how to design rehabilitation that restores not just strength and range of motion, but sensorimotor function and dynamic joint stability. This course equips chiropractors to move beyond simple taping and stretching toward truly integrative, outcomes-focused care.

What You'll Learn

  • Gain a thorough understanding of the clinical anatomy of the foot and ankle, including osseous articulations, ligamentous arrangements of the lateral, medial, and syndesmotic complexes, and the role of longitudinal arches in dynamic stability.
  • Critically evaluate current practices in managing chronic ankle injuries, integrating orthopedic and neurologic assessment frameworks to differentiate mechanical from functional instability.
  • Develop comprehensive rehabilitative strategies for various ankle injuries, incorporating sensorimotor retraining, progressive loading protocols, and evidence-based approaches to restoring dynamic joint stability.
Course Outline
  • Ankle Joint Complex — Clinical Anatomy — osseous articulations (talocrural, subtalar, midtarsal); ligamentous arrangements (lateral complex — ATFL, CFL, PTFL — deltoid ligament, syndesmotic complex); medial and lateral longitudinal arches and load distribution; intrinsic and extrinsic musculature; mechanoreceptor distribution and proprioceptive function.
  • The Common Ankle Sprain — Mechanism and Management — inversion, plantarflexion, and supination injury patterns; Grade I–III classification of lateral ligamentous disruption; acute vs. chronic presentation; current best practices including early protected mobilization; why ankle sprains recur — proprioceptive and neuromuscular deficits.
  • The Ortho/Neuro Perspective on Ankle Stability — mechanical vs. functional instability; the resting attitude of the foot as a clinical indicator; neurological contributors including proprioceptive loss and altered reflex arcs; kinetic chain implications for the knee, hip, and lumbar spine; orthopedic special tests — anterior drawer, talar tilt, external rotation stress test.
  • Comprehensive Rehabilitative Strategies — five phases from acute management and swelling control through range of motion restoration, progressive strengthening (peroneals, tibialis anterior and posterior, intrinsics), sensorimotor retraining with balance board and single-leg stability progressions, to sport-specific return-to-activity programming; bracing, taping, and orthotic decision-making; surgical referral criteria for chronic mechanical instability.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Orthopedics 218: The Floppy Ankle cover?

Orthopedics 218 is a 2-hour online chiropractic CE course on chronic ankle instability — the "floppy ankle" — from an integrated orthopedic and neurologic perspective. It covers ankle joint anatomy including ligamentous complexes and mechanoreceptor distribution, the common ankle sprain from mechanism to management, mechanical versus functional instability, orthopedic special tests, and comprehensive five-phase rehabilitation through sensorimotor retraining and return-to-activity programming. Chiropractors may search for it as a chronic ankle instability course, ankle rehabilitation CE, or a CAI course.

Is Orthopedics 218 PACE-approved and accepted in my state?

Yes. CCEDseminars is PACE Provider #34015544, recognized by the Federation of Chiropractic Licensing Boards (FCLB), with courses accepted in 40+ U.S. states, Canadian provinces, and international jurisdictions. Completions auto-report to CE Broker for states served. The full approval list for this course appears at the bottom of the page.

Why do ankles feel weak or keep giving out after repeated sprains?

Repeated lateral ankle sprains do more than stretch ligaments — they disrupt the mechanoreceptors embedded in those structures, producing proprioceptive deficits and altered neuromuscular firing patterns. The result is an ankle that gives way even when the ligaments look intact: functional instability. Orthopedics 218 teaches chiropractors to differentiate mechanical from functional instability and to rehabilitate both — restoring not just strength but sensorimotor control.

How many CE hours does Orthopedics 218 award, and how is the certificate issued?

Orthopedics 218 awards 2 chiropractic CE hours. Your certificate is issued electronically the moment you complete the course and quiz, and is available in your CCEDseminars account. Completions auto-report to CE Broker for participating states.

Which CCED orthopedics courses pair well with Orthopedics 218?

Doctors who take Orthopedics 218 often add Orthopedics 215: Foot & Ankle Conditions, 216: Plica Syndrome, and 217: Achilles Tendinitis — the complete lower-extremity block. All Orthopedics 201–224 courses also count toward the 48-hour CCO certification.
