IDFPR issued a variance extending the license renewal deadline for Chiropractic Physician (038) licensees from July 31, 2026 to August 31, 2026 without a late fee. The Department did not extend the CME completion deadline. All continuing medical education for the 2023–2026 cycle was required to be completed by July 31, 2026. If you have not finished your hours, contact IDFPR directly at 1-800-560-6420 before submitting your renewal — do not assume the renewal extension covers your education requirement.
Illinois chiropractic physicians must complete 150 hours of continuing medical education every three years, with a minimum of 60 hours in formal (Category 1) programs and no more than 90 hours in informal (Category 2) activities, plus five state-mandated topic trainings on staggered three- and six-year cycles. Illinois places no cap on online CE and no limit on hours completed in a single day — enduring online material qualifies as formal CME when the sponsor is recognized, so the entire 150 hours may be earned online.

Illinois requires 150 hours in the 36 months preceding July 31 of your renewal year. One CE hour equals 60 minutes; after you complete the initial hour, credit may be awarded in 30-minute increments. There is no daily limit — the rule places no cap on hours completed in a single day. Hours used for one renewal cannot be reapplied to another.

One hour of cultural competency, and one hour on the diagnosis, treatment, and care of individuals with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias — the latter required of any licensee who directly interacts with patients aged 26 and above. Both count toward your 150.
Licensees required to report child abuse or neglect must complete mandated reporter training within three months of entering the role, then at least every six years thereafter if working with children in a professional capacity. Illinois DCFS provides this training at no cost.
One hour every six years, required only of licensed health care professionals who also hold an Illinois Controlled Substance License. Most Illinois chiropractic physicians do not hold one and are not subject to this requirement — verify your own registration status.

Illinois does not collect your certificates at renewal. You attest to compliance in the IDFPR portal and retain the documentation yourself. Each certificate should carry the sponsor's name, address, and license number; your name and address; a brief statement of the subject matter; the hours attended; the date and place; and the sponsor's signature. Sponsors are required to keep their own records for not less than five years, and you should hold yours at least as long.

Yes. Illinois sets no cap on distance learning. Enduring materials — recorded presentations, computer-assisted instruction, archived webinars, and printed educational materials — are classified as formal CME when they state their educational objectives, identify the intended audience, and verify participation. That means online coursework can satisfy the 60-hour formal minimum rather than being confined to the informal category, which is not true in every state. There is also no rule limiting how many hours may be completed in a single day.
Five, on staggered cycles, and all of them count toward the 150-hour total. Every renewal: one hour of sexual harassment prevention and one hour of implicit bias awareness. Every six years: one hour of cultural competency and one hour on Alzheimer's disease and other dementias, the latter applying to licensees who directly interact with patients aged 26 and older. Separately, mandated reporter training on identifying and reporting child abuse is required within three months of entering the role and at least every six years thereafter for those working with children professionally — Illinois DCFS offers it free.
A sixth requirement, one hour of safe opioid prescribing every six years, applies only to licensees who also hold an Illinois Controlled Substance License. Timing on the six-year items depends on when you last completed each one, so confirm your own position with IDFPR rather than assuming the cycle resets with your renewal.
Illinois names its recognized sponsor categories in rule rather than deferring entirely to a national accreditor. They include the Illinois Chiropractic Society, the Illinois Prairie State Chiropractic Association, the Council on Chiropractic Education's Commission on Accreditation, the International Chiropractors Association, the American Chiropractic Association, any accredited school, college, or university, State agencies, and sponsors licensed directly by the Division.
