New York chiropractors must complete 36 hours of continuing education in each 3-year registration period to reregister with the NYSED Office of the Professions — 24 of those hours must be formal (live, instructor-interactive) learning and no more than 12 may be self-study, with at least 12 hours in patient communication, recordkeeping, law, and/or ethics. New York has no single statewide renewal date: your registration period ends in your month of birth, so your personal deadline is printed on your registration certificate. New York State Education Law requires 36 contact hours of continuing education in each 3-year registration period. One contact hour equals at least 50 minutes of instruction, and a maximum of 10 CE hours may be earned in any single day.
There is no statewide deadline. Registration is per-licensee and, after adjustment, renews in your month of birth on a three-year cycle — so your personal due date is the expiration date printed on your registration certificate. If your first registration period is shorter than three years, you owe 1 contact hour for each month of that period (for example, a 30-month period requires 30 hours). New licensees are exempt from CE during their first registration period; endorsement licensees are not.
No carryover: hours earned in one registration period cannot be carried into the next. Complete each period's 36 hours within that period.
Of the 36 hours, at least two-thirds (24 hours) must be formal courses and no more than one-third (12 hours) may be self-study.
24 hours — Formal (live/interactive).
A formal course gives you the opportunity for immediate interaction with the instructor. NYSED confirms this includes live webinars, telecourses, and computerized courses where you can interact directly with the instructor — not only same-room classroom settings. Our live interactive webinars qualify here, and there is no cap on formal hours.
Up to 12 hours — Self-study.
Structured on-demand coursework (audio, video, written, or online media) from an approved sponsor, with a testing instrument you complete and pass. Our on-demand catalog fills this portion. A pre-recorded lecture with no means of direct interaction counts as self-study, not formal.
The practical takeaway: you can satisfy all 36 hours through our approved formal (live) courses if you wish, or mix in up to 12 self-study hours from our on-demand library.
Of the 36 hours, at least one-third (12 hours) must be in patient communications, recordkeeping, and/or matters of law and ethics that contribute to professional practice and to the health, safety, and welfare of the public.
The remaining hours may be in chiropractic technique, diagnosis, clinical interventions and evidence-based models, neurological testing, philosophy and principles of chiropractic, and the basic and clinical sciences related to chiropractic practice.
Subject limits: New York does not accept coursework designed solely to maximize practice profits, and all subjects must contribute to professional and clinical skills as defined in Education Law § 6551. Choose courses within NYSED-approved subject areas.
New York only accepts CE administered by an NYSED-approved sponsor and offered in an approved subject area. PACE recognition alone is the key: NYSED lists Providers of Approved Continuing Education (PACE), through the FCLB, as an approved sponsor route.
