How CCO Counts CE: Structured, Self-Directed & Your Portfolio

Ontario works differently from most U.S. state boards, and it's worth understanding before you buy anything. CCO does not maintain an approved-provider list that stamps courses as valid. Instead, members record their learning in a professional portfolio under Standard of Practice S-003, and CE is categorised by how the activity is structured.

CCO describes structured CE activities as those with structured agendas, specified learning objectives, and/or the opportunity for interaction with other members of the profession. Self-directed (unstructured) learning covers reading, research, and independent study you undertake on your own initiative.

What that means practically: CCEDseminars courses are built with published learning objectives and structured content, and live webinars add real-time interaction with faculty — the characteristics CCO associates with structured CE. You remain responsible for categorising each activity correctly in your own portfolio and retaining documentation. When in doubt about how a specific activity should be recorded, ask CCO directly rather than assuming.

Cycle 9 Just Opened — Why That Matters

CE Cycle 9 runs July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2028. Your 40 hours reset at the start of it, which makes right now the least stressful moment in the entire two-year window to plan.

Forty hours across 24 months works out to under two hours a month. Members who treat it that way finish comfortably; members who defer it face 40 hours in a final scramble alongside a controlled-acts requirement and possibly a six-year in-person obligation landing in the same window. Build the habit early in the cycle, not late.

The 5-Hour Controlled Acts Requirement

Each cycle, 5 of your structured hours must address diagnostic or therapeutic procedures related to a controlled act within the chiropractic scope of practice. This is a content requirement — it tells you what the hours must be about.

Clinically-focused coursework in examination, diagnosis, and therapeutic procedure is the natural fit — see the clinical course categories, particularly physical examination, diagnosis, and adjustive technique subjects. Handle these 5 hours early in the cycle rather than late, and record how the content maps to a controlled act in your portfolio entry.

Three Requirements Online CE Cannot Cover

Straight answer: three parts of your CCO obligation can't be met with online coursework from us or anyone else, and you should plan for them separately.

1. The 5-hour in-person hands-on requirement — adjustment or manipulation training with hands-on or hand-held instrument technique, once every three cycles. CCO notes this may be sourced through accredited chiropractic colleges, professional associations, or private CE providers, and that it need not be completed in Ontario. The College also notes members may develop qualifying in-person opportunities for one another.

2. The Regulatory Excellence Workshop — required once every three cycles for General class members. CCO delivers it virtually, several times a year, free of charge. Register through CCO; nobody should be selling you this.

3. Emergency First Aid and CPR Level C + AED — the hands-on skills component must be completed in person through a recognised training provider. Keep the certificate current, and note that the course itself may count toward your structured hours.
