All holders of a certificate of licence to practise chiropractic in West Virginia must renew annually on or before July 1 by presenting the Board evidence of completion of at least 18 hours of continuing education each year — of which up to six hours may be mandated in special subjects by the Board (W. Va. Code § 30-16-15). West Virginia operates on a fiscal year running July 1 through June 30, with all chiropractic licences expiring June 30. Hours must be classroom hours sponsored through an approved chiropractic college, a maximum of six may be earned online, and certificates of completion are submitted with the renewal rather than simply attested.

Every licensee must present the Board evidence of completion of at least 18 hours of continuing education each year. The Board's legislative rule describes these as 18 classroom hours, sponsored through an approved chiropractic college.
West Virginia operates on a fiscal year, July 1 through June 30, and all chiropractic licences expire annually on June 30. That is unlike the calendar-year states — hours earned in, say, February count toward the year ending that June, not the following December.
All renewal documents must be postmarked and fees paid on or before July 1. Renewals postmarked after July 1 incur a late fee, and after July 31 an additional reinstatement fee.
This is the West Virginia provision most worth understanding, because the required topics are not fixed in the rule — the Board sets them.
The statute allows that of the 18 hours, up to six may be mandated in special subjects by the Board. The Board may require that six of the eighteen pertain to certain subjects — communicable diseases, first aid, sexual boundaries, record keeping, and other subjects the Board considers appropriate. Its own materials also cite scope of practice, ethics, billing and advertising as examples.
How you find out: when the Board requires six hours of specific continuing education, all licensees are notified in the current annual renewal notice of the subject matter required. The licensee is then given until the next annual renewal period to complete those hours.
Practical consequence: read your renewal notice properly each year. A West Virginia requirement can change between cycles, and no third-party CE summary — including this one — can tell you in advance what the Board will designate. Programs for mandated subjects are approved by the Board prior to presentation.
West Virginia permits a maximum of 6 online hours out of the 18 — a third of the requirement — so at least 12 hours must come from other formats.
The sponsorship route matters as much as the format: the Board's rule specifies that the hours shall be sponsored through an approved chiropractic college. New graduates. Newly graduated doctors of chiropractic who receive their initial licence in the year of their graduation are exempt from the continuing education requirements — but they are still required to meet all other aspects of licence renewal.
Reporting. West Virginia is not an attestation state. The licensee submits certificates of completion to the Board with the renewal application, presenting evidence of the required hours. Keep your certificates organised through the year rather than assembling them at the end of June.
Failure to renew a certificate of licence to practise chiropractic operates as an automatic suspension of the rights and privileges granted by its issuance. There is no separate notice step — the suspension follows from the failure to renew.
Reinstatement within two years requires presentation of evidence of completion of the required hours of continuing education for each year the licence has been suspended, plus payment of all fees that would have been paid had the certificate been maintained in good standing, and a reinstatement fee.
After a lapse of two years, no certificate may be reinstated at all. A licence may then be issued only after the former certificate holder has fulfilled all other requirements of licensure and has passed the National Special Purposes Examination (SPEC) for Chiropractic. West Virginia's two-year cliff is among the firmer ones in the country.
