A licentiate seeking license renewal must obtain 18 hours of Board-approved continuing education each calendar year. North Carolina runs an annual cycle — the requirement resets every January 1 and closes December 31.
Renewal carries a $300 fee, and the Board asks licensees to renew early because processing takes several business days. A current license that is not renewed is placed on inactive status on January 30 of the following year.
This is the provision that shapes every North Carolina CE plan, and it is more generous than it first appears.
At least 10 of your 18 hours must be obtained by attending in-person or live online educational sessions. The rule is explicit that live online hours include the opportunity to interact with the instructor in real time — so a genuine live webinar counts toward the same 10 hours as driving to a weekend seminar.
The remaining allowance is capped: as many as eight hours may be obtained through recorded or self-study formats.

North Carolina's course-approval criteria are unusually pointed, and they exclude a whole category of popular seminars:
Continuing education must be approved by the Board for doctors of chiropractic, chiropractic assistants and radiological technicians alike. North Carolina uses CE Broker, and it sits directly in the renewal path rather than off to one side. Record all of your continuing education hours in CE Broker before you begin renewal.
When you start the renewal, the system asks for your North Carolina license number and checks your CE Broker record. If your CE is complete you may proceed; if it is not, you cannot continue until your CE Broker account reflects the requirement. A free CE Broker account is available through the Board's website. Plan the reporting step as part of your deadline, not after it.
Recent graduates. A licentiate who was enrolled in chiropractic college at any time during the year of initial licensure is not required to complete the 18-hour annual requirement for that calendar year. The annual requirement begins the calendar year following the year the license was received — but the license must still be renewed.
Everyone else. If you are not a recent graduate and received your North Carolina license before September 1 of that year, you must complete the 18 hours for that year. If you were licensed after September 1, your 18-hour requirement begins the next calendar year.

Yes. North Carolina accepts FCLB PACE as an approval route for continuing education. Courses must still meet the Board's criteria — subject matter within the scope of North Carolina chiropractic licensure, no practice-building or motivational content, and qualified instructors.
