Licensed Washington chiropractors must complete 25 hours of continuing education each year, due by the licensee's birthday, under the Chiropractic Quality Assurance Commission (WAC 246-808-150 and RCW 18.25.070). A maximum of 12 of those hours may be earned through multimedia programs — a category that expressly includes internet courses, teleseminars and live remote webinars. Two hours of health equity training are required every four years, and a one-time three-hour training in suicide screening and referral must be completed during your first full reporting period after initial licensure. Washington requires no prior approval of continuing education, and the Commission recognizes FCLB PACE.

Licensed chiropractors must complete 25 hours of continuing education as required in RCW 18.25.070. Washington runs an annual cycle, and both licence renewal and continuing education must be completed before the licensee's birthdate each year — so your deadline is personal to you rather than a common statewide date.
A chiropractor in active status who resides and practises outside Washington must meet all the same requirements. Registered chiropractic X-ray technicians carry their own separate requirement of six hours per year.
This is the provision that most often trips up chiropractors licensed in more than one state.
A chiropractor may earn a maximum of 12 hours for completing a multimedia chiropractic education program — a category that WAC 246-808-150 defines as including, but not limited to, the internet, teleseminars, employer-led training, live remote webinars, and audio or video presentations. The same 12-hour maximum also covers hours earned by serving as a teacher or lecturer in an approved programme.
Note carefully: Washington classifies live remote webinars as multimedia. A number of other states treat a live, interactive webinar as equivalent to in-person attendance — North Carolina, for example, counts live online toward its in-person minimum. Washington does not. If you hold licences in several states, do not assume a webinar behaves the same way in each.
The practical planning consequence: at least 13 of your 25 hours must come from outside the multimedia category.
Beginning January 1, 2024, as part of the continuing education requirements, a chiropractor must complete a minimum of two hours of training in health equity every four years, in accordance with WAC 246-12-800 through 246-12-830. Hours spent completing health equity continuing education count toward the annual requirement rather than sitting on top of it. Because the cadence is four years rather than annual, note the date you complete it.
As part of the continuing education requirements, a chiropractor must obtain a one-time, three-hour training in suicide screening and referral from a qualified suicide prevention training program. The training must be completed during the first full reporting period after initial licensure.
A qualified training programme is empirically supported training in suicide screening and referral of at least three hours in length. The Department of Health publishes a model list of approved programmes. These hours count toward your 25 — they are not additional. This is a one-time obligation, not a recurring one.
A chiropractor is not required to obtain prior approval of any continuing education, and the Commission does not pre-approve courses. That flexibility comes with responsibility: the subject matter must fall within the list the Commission approves.
Approved subjects within the scope of practice include diagnosis and treatment of the spine or extremity articulations, x-ray and diagnostic imaging, adjustive technique, detection of a subluxation, physical examination, hygiene, symptomatology, neurology, pathology, orthopedics, patient and case management, impairment within the scope of practice, CPR, and dietary and nutritional advice. Governmental regulations relevant to chiropractic and public health are capped at 12 hours.
What will not count: subject matter not directly relating to the chiropractic clinical scope of practice, and conduct prohibited by Washington statutes or rules governing chiropractic practice.
PACE carries real weight here. The Commission recognizes the Provider Approved Continuing Education (PACE) program, and in the event of a CE audit the CQAC will accept documentation, transcripts and reports from PACE on the licensee's behalf. Renewal is by attestation, with audit. Retain your completion certificates — name, course title, hours, date and provider.
Extensions. Extensions of time may be granted as described in WAC 246-808-150, but the Commission's own advice is blunt: do not wait until the CE is due to request one. Responses to extension requests can take two weeks or longer.
